NMSI in the News

Consistent and rigorous coursework is vital to student success in the classroom, but far too often the children of our military families do not receive such an education. NMSI, however, is changing that this week as an estimated 300 teachers from across the nation gather together at Oklahoma’s Del City High School near Tinker AFB. NMSI in the News
by
Timothy Huneycutt
Earlier this month, a $930,637 grant from The Heinz Endowments made it possible for two Pennsylvanian high schools – Brashear and Sci-Tech – to implement NMSI’s Comprehensive Advanced Placement (AP) Program. On how this grant will impact the schools, Eleanor Chute of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes, “Combined, 38 students at both schools earned a score of at least 3 – considered to be a qualifying score – on AP exams in 2011-12. Results for 2012-13 aren't in yet, but the goal is to have 124 such scores in 2013-14, ...

Sara Martinez Tucker, NMSI CEO –“We’ve got big challenges, our students are falling further and further behind in math and science, but we can fix it. The research shows that the early years really matter – getting them excited – getting them wanting to learn about what’s out there. If we get it right they are hooked on either math or science – and that’s huge, not just for our kids but for the future of our country.” Too Small To Fail

Texas STAAR Tests Flat
On June 11, 2013 in
General
by
David Saba
Compared to last year, Texas student performance was relatively flat on the state's high school testing. Students do well on Algebra I with 82% passing and biology with 88% passing but are still horrible at writing with only 54% passing the exam which is required for graduation. When students do poorly it seems the automatic response is to lower the standards and Texas is no different - Governor Perry just signed into law House Bill 5 which drops the number of tests required to graduate from 15 down to 5. ...

Common Core and Military Families
On June 10, 2013 in
General
by
David Saba
Great Op-Ed in today's Washington Post on Common Core State Standards by Governor Jack Markell from Delaware supporting the work and clearly demonstrating that this is not a Federal takeover of education but a state driven process.
