April Is The Month Of The Military Child

April is the Month of the Military Child! It is a time to honor the families of our Servicemembers who sacrifice so much so that their loved ones can serve and protect this country.  It is not easy being a military child especially when it comes to education. Military children endure countless moves and new schools which makes it difficult to stay on track towards a goal of higher education.

That is why NMSI worked with great funders like Boeing, Northrup Grumman, BAE, Office of Naval Research (ONR) and now the Department of Defense Education Activity (DODEA) to bring our highly successful AP Program to schools that serve military families. The program started with 4 schools in 2010 and grew to 52 schools last year.  We will add 19 schools into the program for the 2013-14 school year.

To our students from military families, AP means that no matter where they move, they will be roughly in the same place in the curriculum. It means that they have a chance of reducing the cost of college by placing out of some course work and it means that they be challenged in STEM subjects.  When we launched in Hawaii we were told of a Master Sergeant who had to send his son to private school because the local school did not offer AP Physics and Chemistry which his son needed to pursue his dream of earning a degree in science.

The program gets results.
◦The 4 schools in Hawaii in the NMSI program account for 82% of the entire stat's gains in passing AP math, science, and English
◦The 3 schools in Colorado accounted for 19% of the of the entire stat's gains in passing AP math, science, and English
◦the 2 schools in Oklahoma accounted for 35% of the entire state's gains in passing AP math, science, and English

There is nothing better than meeting these students and seeing the impact this has on their lives.

But we need your help to ensure that all military families get the same opportunities. We have a challenge grant to expand the program but need to raise funds to ensure that more students from military families get the chance to go into a STEM career.  Please donate today.  The challenge grant means that for every dollar you donate to NMSI in the month of April is tripled!  It is a great way to tell our Servicemembers that we understand the sacrifice their families make and we wont let them sacrifice a great
