Leaders in Education Gather to Discuss STEM Solutions and their Future Impact on American Classrooms

DALLAS – The National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) is proud to announce their support and participation at the upcoming U.S. News STEM Solutions 2013 Conference, taking place in Austin, Texas this June. For the second year, leaders and visionaries will convene and advance the agenda for national change in STEM education, policy and workforce development. The conference promotes thought-provoking conversations about how communities, and the nation, will work together to advance the future of STEM.

“The National Math and Science Initiative’s dedication to the expansion of rigorous education and our commitment to help students thrive in the 21st century brings us to support the upcoming STEM Solutions 2013 Conference. The future of this nation relies on our students, and we believe it is our responsibility to ensure their success,” said Sara Martinez Tucker, CEO of the National Math and Science Initiative.

The conference theme—Teach. Inspire. Hire.—is a call-to-action. All participants will focus on specific outcomes that have an impact on filling current jobs and advancing the future of the STEM workforce.

As a recognized change-maker in STEM and supporting partner of the conference, NMSI plays an important role, helping to identify experiences relative to the STEM issue by developing new ideas and creating new solutions to help change education policy, advance the development of the STEM workforce, and raise the level of excellence in American classrooms. The involvement of NMSI ensures that each facet of the STEM sphere remains top-of-mind.

Leading one of the discussions is Dave Saba, COO of the National Math and Science Initiative, who will be participating in the breakout session “The Front Lines: On-The-Job Training for STEM Teachers,” scheduled for Wednesday, June 19, 2013.

“There’s a great need in the United States for more skilled workers in math and science. NMSI provides teachers with more rigorous content and classroom-ready resources, that truly encourages and prepares students for a successful future,” said Dave Saba, COO of the National Math and Science Initiative.

NMSI’s Teacher Training program has trained over 60,000 teachers providing them with the best content-based, pedagogy-driven teacher-to-teacher training. This hands-on training is designed to increase rigor and is deeply aligned to the Common Core State Standards.

“Bringing educational programs into the classroom will provide an immediate impact on students’ learning, confidence and preparation for their life after graduation,” said Saba.

U.S. News & World Report has enthusiastically welcomed the organization’s involvement. “We are so proud to have the support of powerful organizations in STEM, offering invaluable insight, resources and commitment. We look forward to their many contributions and involvement at the second U.S. News STEM Solutions in Austin,” says Brian Kelly, Managing Editor of U.S. News & World Report.

About National Math and Science Initiative: NMSI, a non-profit organization, was launched in 2007 by top leaders in business, education, and science to transform education in the United States. NMSI has received national recognition for training K-12 teachers and improving student performance through the rapid expansion of these highly successful programs: NMSI's AP program, NMSI's Teacher Training program, and UT Austin’s UTeach program. NMSI’s AP program dramatically increases the number of students taking and passing AP math, science, and English exams, and expands access to traditionally underrepresented students and students in military families. NMSI’s Teacher Training program has trained over 60,000 teachers to deliver more rigorous lessons in the classroom and was selected by PARCC as a premier partner to deliver common core teacher training. The UTeach program, which is now in 35 universities in 17 states, will produce a new generation of content-trained teachers that will impact millions of students in the next decade. Inaugural funding for NMSI was provided by the Exxon Mobil Corporation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation.
