NMSI from the Teacher/Student Point of View

We had an event with a potential funder at one of our premier NMSI schools yesterday and the quotes from teachers and students were too great not to share.

From one of our AP English Teachers: "When I started teaching AP English I got the training and just started teaching. All three of the teachers at our school were doing something different in class - but we were not really focused on how to make the college level materials accessible to all kids.  What I most value in the NMSI AP program is that we came together after the training to take the best of what we had learned and are able to apply it in all our classes.  We are such a great team that we adopted a new English teacher due to the need in our school and have been able to train him for rapid success."

From a Senior in High School - "I took 9 AP's so far and will be able to start college as a sophomore. The Saturday study sessions with AP experts from around the country have really helped me learn the material. I have friends in college taking chemistry that call me because i know the material so well. When I was applying to college the AP success I had helped me stand out on my applications."

From an AP math teacher: "The NMSI training is invaluable - but not just the training in the summer - it is the training throughout the year in the fall, from mentors, during mock AP exams and through Saturday study sessions that have made me a much better teacher.  Many kids are discouraged from trying AP but when they hear about the support through tutoring and Saturday study sessions it gives them the confidence to try it.  That is a huge difference."

From an AP physics teacher: "I have been with the program a while and I continue to grow as a teacher through the NMSI AP program. Going through the mock AP exams with seasoned table readers is just amazing and helps us really understand the exams. We take that knowledge back into the classrooms and it gives our students even greater confidence in their ability.  On Saturdays, for my kids to study with AP experts from around the nation is just tremendous and allows them to get another perspective.  NMSI has brought confidence and success to our students"

From a Junior at the school: "My AP success will reduce the cost of college for my family which is critical since I have two siblings behind me. I am going to be able to take a double major and still graduate on time.  The student awards are going right into my college fund which I really need.  I cannot thank you enough for this opportunity."

From the superintendent: "At the end of the day we have to take the incredible resources given to us and leverage them into long term success.  We know this is a three year program so we are already planning on how to sustain the gains long after the program is gone through teacher training, student support and the extra time students receive. NMSI is a gift to our students and a chance for the district to take that gift and ensure it benefits many more."
