NMSI’s College Readiness Program Expands to Missouri School District

Thanks to a $300,000 grant from the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), we are happy to announce that NMSI’s College Readiness Program is expanding for the first time to the state of Missouri. This summer, NMSI will train teachers from the Waynesville R-VI School District to begin implementing the three-year program to help raise the level of academic rigor in their classrooms and increase the number of students earning passing scores on their Advanced Placement (AP) exams.

Waynesville School District will offer five new AP courses this fall, bringing the total number of AP courses the district offers up to 13. AP enrollment for 2014-15 has already more than doubled from this past school year and NMSI’s hands-on summer training program will help prepare teachers for fall classes.

“We are very excited about expanding the opportunities for our students to take challenging courses. This grant provides us the training and support to reach more students and better prepare them for the future demands of college and their chosen careers,” said Courtney Long, principal at Waynesville High School.

NMSI’s College Readiness Program—which not only provides teacher training, but also focused student study sessions and incentives—has been implemented in more than 560 schools across 23 states,  In 2013, schools that participated in the program saw an average first-year increase of 72% in the number of passing math, science, and English AP scores – a phenomenal increase compared to the national average of 7.2%. This program is integral to NMSI’s overarching mission to help more students gain access to and succeed in rigorous, college-level coursework in high school so that they are fully equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to become college and career ready.

We hope the students and teachers from the Waynesville School District have a wonderful summer break and we look forward to working with each and every one of them.
