Dr. Jill Biden to Visit Escambia High School

Second Lady of the United States Dr. Jill Biden is scheduled to speak about the National Math and Science Initiative’s (NMSI) College Readiness Program for Military Families on Friday at Escambia High School. During the event, Dr. Biden will be joined by Jason Silva, host of National Geographic Channel’s Brain Games, for a series of scientific challenges between students from local high schools.

In 2011, Dr. Biden and First Lady Michelle Obama introduced Joining Forces, a nationwide initiative calling all Americans to rally around service members, veterans, to their families and support them through wellness, education, and employment opportunities. Dr. Biden championed the expansion of the College Readiness Program to military-connected schools as part of Joining Forces. NMSI received funding from Lockheed Martin Corporation for Advanced Placement programs at schools serving military bases.

Escambia School District is one of two districts in the state, and 13 in the nation, to be accepted into the program this year. Five of the seven high schools in the School District – Escambia High School, Pensacola High School, Pine Forest High School, Booker T. Washington High School and West Florida High School – will participate in the College Readiness Program.

Escambia County School Superintendent Malcolm Thomas spoke about the event and NMSI’s College Readiness Program on Pensacola News Radio this morning. Listen to the podcast here.
