Before schools close for winter break, NMSI is taking a step back to look at our 2019 highlights.

Since January, around 65,000 students have participated in NMSI study sessions. About 9,000 teachers went through NMSI’s spring, summer and fall trainings.

Wondering how your state, school system and school are doing at delivering a successful STEM education? In the spring, NMSI made this data easily accessible by launching an interactive online map called the STEM Opportunity Index. Users click through the map to find the location they’re interested in exploring. NMSI and 50 partner organizations determined 10 practices, conditions and outcomes that contribute to a quality STEM education.

Continuing our Military Families Mission, the Department of Defense selected a coalition of more than a dozen organizations, including NMSI, for a $75 million initiative. As part of the coalition, NMSI will work with additional elementary and secondary schools to ensure students have access to rigorous, hands-on STEM education and teachers have the training needed to lead those courses. For this work, we will focus on serving students underrepresented in STEM careers, military-connected students and students identified as gifted and talented.

NMSI began offering online student study sessions in the spring. This gives students more flexibility of when and where they participation in this resource.

In the summer, NMSI hosted 13 teacher training Summer Institutes across the country for our Laying the Foundation and College Readiness Program. For the first time, NMSI used culturally responsive teaching  practices at the Summer Institutes. Presenters modeled inclusive and collaborative strategies, and materials represented more diverse voices.

Also this summer, NMSI hosted its first K-12 Computer Science training for about 235 teachers, administrators and counselors.

For the 2019-20 school year, NMSI launched more than 80 new CRP schools in 14 states. Together, NMSI and the UTeach Institute launched two new UTeach programs at Stephen F. Austin State University and the University of Houston–Clear Lake.

We look forward to continuing our work with students, teachers and schools in the new year. If you'd like to join us in increasing access and achievement in STEM, please consider a giving to NMSI by clicking the button below. Happy holidays!
