Students Achieve 78% Qualifying AP Statistics Exam Scores in the Last School Year

We are eager to recognize yet another remarkable NMSI Teacher of the Year: Brian Canady, AP Statistics teacher at Lee-Davis High School in Richmond, VA.
Mr. Canady is recognized as a notable teacher and a mentor to the students and teachers at Lee-Davis High School. With his help and support there were 50 qualifying scores out of 64 students taking the AP Statistics exam last year. Fourteen students scored 5’s, eighteen students scored 4’s, and eighteen students scored 3’s. He promotes both academic excellence and extracurricular activities to get students involved in their school and communities.  Students taking the AP Statistics exam in this school went from 47% qualifying scores in 2008 to 78% qualifying scores in the last school year. It’s evident that Mr. Canady’s’ hard work in the classroom has truly impacted students.
How does he engage with students?
•Encourages creative ways to solve problems
•Structured weekly tutoring once a week
•Additional teaching sessions to practice AP exam questions
•Provides help with homework assignments
“I engage the students by creating challenging AP style problems with a twist. I teach them statistics through the ridiculous adventures. These stories (problems) are entertaining to the students so their attention is captured,” stated Mr. Canady.
A teacher truly is a solid example of how students can be successful in the classroom and strong contributors to their communities.
