New program in Beaumont schools aims to boost math skills post-pandemic

BEAUMONT — Math and science scores in Texas public schools have seen a decline in recent years, with the COVID-19 pandemic being a significant factor in disrupting learning and hindering students' ability to master math concepts. Despite efforts, student performance in math has not returned to pre-pandemic levels.

In response, the Beaumont Independent School District (BISD) is implementing a national grant-funded program to address this educational crisis. The district is partnering with the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI), a Dallas-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving student performance by equipping teachers with better instructional strategies.

Gina Rico, a chemistry teacher at West Brook High School, said, "The strategies provided by the National Math and Science Initiative provide resources throughout." She emphasized that the initiative offers valuable training, particularly for underrepresented populations, at no cost to Beaumont ISD.

Semaj Stoner, a math teacher at Homer Drive Elementary, highlighted the benefits of the program, stating, "One thing we do use is student discourse interact with their peers." Stoner noted that the NMSI strategies are already yielding positive results in the classroom, with students experiencing "aha moments."
