St. Landry Parish Schools Recognized for Computer Science Programs as They Recover From Cyber Attack

David Reed is trying to help break stereotypes.

“When you think of computer science you think of the Bill Gates type person, the nerdy kids with glasses and the computer science world is trying to let everybody else know that it’s ok to be a girl, it’s ok to be a minority,” said Northwest High School teacher David Reed.

Northwest High School along with Opelousas High and the Magnet Academy for Cultural Arts are winners of College Board AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award.

Administrators say the districts math and science initiative has helped support the computer science programs.

“We are very proud of all of our schools that we are able to participate in the National Math and Science Initiative, which is commonly known as NMSI. We’re the only district in the State of Louisiana that have all of their high schools to participate in the NMSI program,” said St. Landry Parish School Superintendent Patrick Jenkins.
