About NMSI

We’re proud to lead the way in transforming STEM education. With a legacy of empowering educators through high-quality professional development, NMSI builds strong STEM Identities in students furthest from opportunity.

MEET NMSI

In this video, you’ll meet the passionate team members who power NMSI’s work and hear directly from the educators whose classrooms are transformed by our professional development services. These educators are the heart of our mission, and their dedication is shaping the next generation of STEM leaders and innovators, one student at a time. Watch now to see how we’re making a difference.

NMSI’s Long-Term Effect

Increased Access to High-Quality STEM Education

We equip educators with the tools and training they need to reach every student, especially those furthest from opportunity. By strengthening content knowledge and instructional skills, we help school systems remove barriers and expand access to quality STEM education. We know that, above all else, prepared and supported STEM educators are the key.

Building STEM Identity

Access to high-quality STEM education is just the beginning. Research shows that a student’s STEM Identity, their sense of belonging in STEM and belief in their ability to succeed, is one of the strongest predictors of whether they’ll pursue STEM. At NMSI, we build that identity in every student by providing educators with professional development that enables them to create inclusive, responsive classrooms where all learners feel supported and empowered.

An Empowered, Future-Ready STEM Workforce

STEM careers are growing faster than any other field, and we’re ensuring our students are ready for them. By empowering educators, we’re building a pipeline of future leaders who will shape the world through STEM and innovation.

Our Legacy in STEM Workforce Development

The cancellation of the Superconducting Super Collider in October 1993 was a setback to U.S.-led advances in particle physics. However, as part of the work around the SSC’s inception and construction, industry leaders and educators focused on the STEM workforce needed to support the project, ultimately creating the organization that would become the National Math and Science Initiative.

In 2007, when NMSI was officially founded, we had already identified projected gaps in the STEM workforce and seen that those gaps could be closed through high-quality STEM education. As the years have passed, we continue to make great strides towards flooding the STEM workforce with students taught by prepared, supported educators.

Our organization was created in the pursuit of a qualified, impassioned STEM workforce. This remains a core tenet of our work here at NMSI.
