Military Families Mission

Supporting Military-Connected Students Through STEM Education

Military-connected students move an average of six to nine times throughout their K-12 education, creating disruptions that can impact learning and long-term academic success.

Through the Military Families Mission, a grant-funded initiative by DoW STEM, the National Math and Science Initiative bridges these gaps, by partnering with military-connected school districts to strengthen STEM teaching and student outcomes.

Building Stronger STEM Systems for Military Families

Frequent moves can create gaps in learning, particularly in STEM subjects where concepts build over time. Military-connected students deserve learning environments that provide consistency, support, and opportunities to succeed, regardless of where they attend school.

NMSI partners with school districts serving military-connected communities to strengthen STEM systems, support educators, and improve student outcomes.

Through evidence-based leadership development, educator training, coaching, instructional resources, and ongoing support, we help schools create more consistent learning experiences that keep students on track for success. This system-wide approach supports students through transitions while strengthening STEM teaching and learning across the district.

Stronger Outcomes for Military-Connected Students

Gaps in STEM participation begin early and widen over time. When teachers have tools to foster STEM identity in all learners, those gaps can shrink. Military Families Mission helps educators differentiate instruction, and give every student access to high-quality STEM education - preparing them for participation in college and STEM workforce careers.

For students that attend postsecondary institutions, 49% of NMSI Military Families Mission college graduates earn STEM degrees, compared to 22% nationally.
