NMSI Expands Professional Development for STEM Educators in Georgia, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas, with Grant from General Motors

By

The National Math and Science Initiative is pleased to share our expansion of training for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) teachers across Georgia, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas, thanks to grant support, valued at $1.75 million, from General Motors (GM) . This one-year grant helps NMSI strengthen the talent pipeline for future engineers, innovators, and technicians critical to the automotive and advanced manufacturing sectors.

Through evidence‑based professional development for teachers and school leaders, NMSI supports school systems in delivering coherent, aligned STEM learning experiences that build students’ confidence, skills, and persistence in mathematics and science while increasing their awareness of and interest in pathways that lead to high‑demand STEM careers.

"The foundation of a strong workforce begins in the classroom,” said David Massaron, vice president of Infrastructure and Corporate Citizenship at General Motors. “Through our partnership with NMSI, GM has invested more than $5 million to support education systems in our communities. With this new funding, we are expanding that work by equipping educators in Georgia, Michigan, Ohio and Texas with the tools and training they need to help students build critical skills and pursue high-demand careers."

Georgia, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas are pivotal regions for GM and the broader technology and manufacturing industries. By focusing resources on teacher training, GM and NMSI are proactively addressing the critical need for a workforce prepared for the jobs of tomorrow, from electric vehicle technology to advanced software and vehicle safety systems.

“NMSI's mission is to ensure all students have access to rigorous STEM education, and partnerships with visionary companies like General Motors make this work possible,” said Jeremy Anderson, CEO at NMSI. “This grant will significantly expand our reach in Georgia, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas, helping teachers transform their classrooms and open new doors for their students.”

School districts in Georgia, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas interested in strengthening their STEM instruction and outcomes are encouraged to connect with NMSI to explore partnership. NMSI is eager to partner with districts to provide year-round, research-based professional development to help educators build deep content knowledge, strengthen instructional practices, and foster student confidence and identity in STEM subjects.
