 Q: WHAT IS THE NATIONAL MATH AND SCIENCE INITIATIVE?

National Math and Science Initiative is a STEM education nonprofit which delivers professional development programs to educators across the country. We are dedicated to elevating educators and expanding quality STEM education in schools across the nation. We are bridging the STEM education gap for students furthest from opportunity by providing their teachers wtih resources and support through our professional development programs. Our Professional Development Services focus on strengthening teachers' skills and equipping them with strategies that inspire the next generation of STEM professionals and innovators. 

Q: WHY WAS NMSI CREATED?

STEM education will be needed to solve our biggest problems. Math and science are the foundational literacy of the Information Age – and concern is growing that low performance in math and science is hurting the United States’ global competitiveness.

NMSI was launched in March 2007 by top leaders in American business, education, and science in response to the call for action by the National Academies’ 2005 report, Rising Above the Gathering Storm.

NMSI’s mission is to strive to advance STEM education to ensure all students, especially those furthest from opprotunity, thrive and reach their highest potential as problem solvers and lifelong learners who pursue their passions and tackle the world's toughest challenges.

Q: HOW IS NMSI FUNDED?
As a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, NMSI is funded through a few channels. Much of our funding currently comes from the generous support of corporate sponsors and donors who understand the importance of NMSI's mission. Other funding channels include government grants and revenue from our Professional Development Services.

Q: WHO ARE THE LEADERS OF NMSI?

Our board of directors represent several prominent laboratories, higher education institutions, and leaders in the STEM education space. Our leadership team is representative of the communities NMSI serves, and many of our team members come from backgrounds in STEM and education themselves.

Q: HOW IS NMSI DIFFERENT FROM OTHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROVIDERS?

NMSI believes that quality professional development is culturally responsive, engaging, and customized to fit the needs of the exact school, district, or state in which it's placed. We work with you to determine which of our programs and services will best fit the needs of your community and your educators, and then help you implement the changes necessary to see the largest impact in your student academic achievement. Our long term results are measurable and impactful, and how we help you is entirely custom to what results you want to see.

We incorporate a wide variety of services and programs, which you can explore on our Services page. Our services are broken out by who they support: Teachers, School Leaders, District Leaders, and State Education Leaders.
