How Teachers Can Advocate for Better Professional Development [With Downloadable Toolkit]

As an educator, you advocate for your students every single day — for better classroom materials, quality learning resources, their social-emotional health and their safety.

But do you put that same effort into advocating for your own needs and professional development?

Many teachers don’t have the time or even the resources to prioritize their needs. We’d like to shine a light on the support you deserve to expand your skills and enhance the support of your students.

The Support You Deserve

Although you know to “put on your oxygen mask first” before supporting others, it can feel like an unrealistic goal. However, it’s vitally important. Decades of research validates that highly skilled teachers have a significant impact on student achievement and it’s especially true for the STEM disciplines.

A true high-quality PD is not a “one and done” experience. Instead, it’s an ongoing process of continuous improvement that is aligned with pedagogical best practices and educators’ existing expertise.

Long-term Implications

With significant projected growth in STEM jobs — an increase of nearly 11% from 2021 to 2031 — the education system needs to equip students in pursuit of these career opportunities.

Not only does the United States need a pipeline of savvy STEM professionals to fuel our economy, employees also benefit financially. As of May 2021, median annual wages for STEM occupations were $95,420 which is more than twice as much as non-STEM occupations, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Through the National Math and Science Initiative programs and training, we equip teachers with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to excel in their careers — so they can prepare the next generation for career success.
